What is a Backpacker?

Backpacking is a form of low-cost, independent travel. It includes the use of a backpack that is easily carried for long distances or long periods of time; the use of public transport; inexpensive lodging such as youth hostels; often a longer duration of the trip when compared with conventional vacations; and typically an interest in meeting locals as well as seeing sights. Does this definition describe me?

Not necessarily and not all of it.  What I'm really talking about is an attitude toward travel, my attitude, which is why I subtitle my blog "five-star travel with a backpacker's spirit".
I've reached a point in my life where youth hostels and hitch-hiking are not part of the equation, but that does not include my approach and attitude toward how I travel. Besides,
being involved in plotting and planning a trip promotes something else- personal growth.
I'd thought about subtitling my blog "growthful travel", but that's a slightly hackneyed term.

I always try to save money on traveling, which means choosing my destinations, and plotting and planning my voyages by myself.  You don't need travel companies and tour guides to get you where you want to go.  All you need is a brain, a computer and the motivation, courage and time to figure it out for yourself.  Its not as hard as it seems once you've done it a few times.

When you cut out the middleman you save thousands of dollars.  Not that guides are not sometimes important, but "backpackers" do not need someone holding their hand every step of the way. For me, calling a tour agency is like turning your brain over to someone else.  Anything they can do, I ninety-nine percent of the time, can too.

Want to know how to do this?  In my blog I will share my "backpacker" voyages and show you how it's done, including tips on how to avoid problems.  You will learn to develop and trust your travel instincts instead of marching behind a possibly disinterested tour-guide, although  good guides do exist and every now and they are an asset. Plus, there are some marginal parts of the world I would not think about travelling without a guide, but those are few.

Stay posted for my sometimes impromptu but always fun and interesting travels and maybe you will be inspired to try a self- propelled trip of your own, if you haven't already done one.
